Sun Safe Kids

Since skin damage is cumulative, it is important to practice sun safety as early as possible. Below are several tips to teaching your children the importance of sun safety.

1. Teach and supervise proper sunscreen application. The first application is the most important! During the 15-minute setup time it is essential to avoid direct contact with clothing, which will absorb sunscreen before your skin. See our Application Guide for more details.

2. Practice what you preach. Kids are more accommodating when parents set an example. Wear hats, lip balm, long-sleeves, sunglasses, and sunscreen when outdoors. Don’t allow yourself to tan, disassociate beauty from sun tanning; tanned skin is unhealthy skin. Encourage other parents to do so as well to reduce peer pressure.

3. Ensure that your childcare center or school has a Sun Safety program. If not, suggest the idea to them. Free resources for childcare centers.

The intensity of UV radiation depends on variances in the ozone, clouds, and the elevation of the sun. UV index is a rating system which estimates the intensity of damaging UV radiation for the next day at noon (the suns highest elevation in the sky).
